About the Party:
I originally featured this party from The Purple Pug waaaay back in 2011 – when online photos were much smaller and I didn’t provide many details. (Pinterest was barely a baby site back then – can you imagine?)
So I thought it was time update this featured party so we don’t forget how simple, colorful and heartfelt touches can be everything you need to make your next party fabulous!
The Christmas Pinata
Kristy’s son made this pinata by himself, and I love all the bright colors. She just added some ribbon to trail from the bottom, and turned it into the party backdrop.
I bet you have something that your kids made this Christmas that can also be transformed into a party backdrop. Not only would it be adorable, it’s a great way to showcase your child’s talent and creativity while adding a very personal touch to the party.
Party Buffet Setup
It doesn’t get much simpler than this! A white tablecloth with colorful cardstock acting as placemats for the serving trays, and a swag of tinsel garland to finish it all off.
If you look closely, you can see that she even used a couple heart shaped bowls on the table. It just goes to show that you can easily use decorations that would typically be held for another holiday.
What I Would Change
Include tiered tray, cake stand, or something else to add height.
That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to go buy something. You could easily save extra Amazon boxes, wrap them in leftover Christmas paper, and then put a platter on top of that. Easy, peasy – on both your schedule and your wallet!
Add a Little Something Between the plates
I love the use of the colorful cardstock to help the plates stand out. But if you’re using a large table, and have lots of open space like this buffet, some small decor between the plates can make it feel fuller.
Some simple and fun ideas could be:
- Weave another strand of tinsel garland between the plates
- Some battery operated twinkle lights (go with color in this situation!) twisted around the table
- A green tinsel garland with pom poms on it to coordinate with the pom pom Christmas trees shown below
- Have your kids make colorful paper snowflakes to scatter around the table.
Remember, you don’t have to do anything expensive or complicated to add a little extra something to your party setup!

Colorful Christmas Dining Table
This dining table setup just makes my heart all squishy and warm.
Place Settings
Can I tell you how much I adore those dark blue velvet placemats? Set against a white tablecloth, with a silver charger, and layers of white plates add tons of visual texture without feeling cluttered.
But remember, this party setup is all about color, so a bit of colorful baker’s twine, with a fun rainbow themed name card and just a little bit of bling brings it all together without feeling overwhelmed.
Mini Christmas Trees
Two miniature Christmas trees on the table add a festive note, while leaving room for plenty of food to be placed on and passed around the table. A simple garland made with more baker’s twine and inexpensive pom poms keeps the color going , while still being simple and understated.
Extra Touches to Take it Up a Notch
Pom Pom Tree Branches
Sometimes you can find the best decor right in your backyard. Kristy grabbed some branches from her backyard, glued on some pom poms, added them to a metal vase, and created an adorable decorative piece for a side table.
Using your backyard for decorations has been a favorite of mine for many parties, I’ve spray painted branches gold and used them to hold Christmas Cards, painted leaves a bronzy-gold to create a table runner, and even used acorns and pine cones to create a variety of party decorations. Don’t underestimate the power of nature in your decor!
Use-What-You-Have Napkin Holder
I think most of us have at least one of those short glass vases that typically come with a flower delivery. Add some pom poms in the bottom for color and pop your napkins in back. Voila! You have a simple, but fun napkin holder that cost you nothing extra to create.
Snow Buddies
The addition of a few homemade snowmen, or snow buddies, on the windowsill adds an extra touch of whimsy that kids and adults will love. You can use any small toys you already have on hand, or create your own using a tutorial like thise.
