Music has always been a big part of my life. I still remember how cool it was when my family got a six-disc cd player and had the multi-compartment stereo system and the speakers too big to be hidden by houseplants. It was even connected to my father’s old turntable…but strangely enough, I don’t remember having a tape player in the system. Hmmm.
It’s memories like those that entice me every Saturday morning to fill our Sonos queue with music for a couple hours worth of dance party for the kids. We usually play lots of 70s and 80s music, though sometimes classical music is in order. But since tomorrow is officially Valentine’s Day, it will all be about filling the house with plenty of love songs.
Recently, it occurred to me that so many of the best love songs are so sad. There’s nothing like a broken heart to get the creativity flowing. But we want our kids to associate love songs with joy and happiness. So our dance queue this year will be all about variety. Some songs are sappy, some silly, some rock and roll. The one thing they’ll all have in common, though is that they will all be happy.
So here’s a short list of some of the songs you’d be likely to hear if you come over tomorrow…hopefully it will fill the home with love, happiness, and plenty of memories for our kids when they get older.
