Essential Tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes.
- To reduce spiciness, you can use only half the jalapeno or omit it completely.
- To increase spiciness, include some of the jalapeno seeds
- Make sure to use ripe avocados that are slightly soft to the touch but not mushy.
- Shallots are best for their mild flavor, but if you can’t find them, you can use finely diced white onion instead.
- Don’t skip the salt or lime juice. The salt and acid enhance the natural flavors of the avocado and make all the difference.
- Guacamole also makes a fantastic spread for sandwiches, just like mayonnaise, hummus, or white bean dip
- Be sure not to over mix the ingredients. The goal is to have a slightly chunky guacamole.
Try Adding These Other Ingredients Too
I’ve kept the recipe here simple so you can start with the basics. But if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, here are some other ingredients you can try:
- Finely diced ripe tomatoes
- Fresh garlic – diced or mashed into a paste before adding to the avocado
- Try adding crumbled Queso Blanco, Queso Fresco, or Cotija cheese
- Diced sweet bell pepper (red or yellow)
- Sprinkle on dash of cumin or chili powder for a more complex flavor
These are just a few ideas to make this guacamole recipe your own. Have fun experimenting with different flavors and let us know what combinations you love!
What to Serve with Guacamole
Of course, the classic way to eat guacamole dip is with tortilla chips as an appetizer. But it’s also fantastic other ways:
- As a dip with vegetables or pita chips
- Spread on sandwiches instead of mayonnaise or mustard (I love it on a fresh vegetable sandwich with bell peppers, cucumbers, and spinach)
- As a topping for tacos, burritos, burgers, and salads
Looking for appetizers and recipes that pair well with guacamole? Give these a try:
- Wonton taco cups
- Loaded baked potato bites
- Mexican style corn (Elotes)
- Bolivian corn cake (Huminta)
- Margaritas
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I Make guacamole ahead of time?
Guacamole is best made right before you enjoy it, but you can make it a few hours in advance. Avocado turns brown when it comes into contact with air (oxidation), so make sure you keep the surface of your guacamole completely covered. See our storage tips below for more information.
How do I choose a ripe avocado?
When choosing an avocado, it shouldn’t be too firm or too soft. Look for avocados that have a dark skin without any blemishes that are slightly soft to the touch when held in the palm of your hand.
If all you can find are hard avocados, you can add them to a brown paper bag with a banana overnight to speed up the ripening process.
Can I substitute lemon juice for the lime juice?
Yes, you can substitute lemon juice for the lime juice in this recipe. Both are acidic and will provide a tangy flavor to the guacamole. Remember, though, the flavor won’t be exactly the same. As lemon can be quite tart, I recommend you start with half the listed quantity of juice and adjust as necessary.
Storage Tips/Freezing, Etc.
Guacamole is best eaten immediately after mixing.
Leftovers: Refrigerate leftover guacamole for 1-2 days. To avoid oxidation, press a layer of plastic wrap onto the entire surface of the dip, making sure there are no air pockets.
To revitalize leftover guacamole squeeze a bit of lime juice into the guacamole and give it a stir. This should reduce any brown spots that may have happened even if it was stored correctly.
Freezing: Technically speaking, you can freeze guacamole in ziplock freezer bags with all the air removed. However I strongly advise against it as the texture of avocados is changed when frozen and thawed. If you choose to freeze your leftovers, use them within 3 months as an ingredient in another recipe or as a spread for sandwiches (not as a dip or topping).
