These deliciously eerie delights are swaddled in warm, flaky crescent roll bandages, hiding a secret hot dog core that kids absolutely adore. So, let’s embark on this culinary adventure together and bring out our inner ghouls and goblins, because we’re making mummies come alive on your dining table—talk about a monstrously appetizing Halloween!
What Makes Mummy Dogs the Perfect Halloween Treat
It’s 5pm and the sun won’t be out much longer.
Costumes need fixing, you want decent pictures of your kids in their costumes, and somehow dinner needs to get on the table.
Halloween night is downright hectic!
The last thing you want to worry about is getting dinner on the table. But then again, taking kids out to collect candy without a good dinner is also asking for trouble.
Which is why I love making mummy dogs for my kids on Halloween.
Not only are they a fun treat to make, but they actually can be made in advance, and heated up while you’re scrambling to find the kids’ candy bags.
Plus, the kids just love them. It’s a win all around.
What You’ll Need:
Ingredients:
- Beef hot dogs, not bun size
- Crescent rolls
- Ketchup or mustard
Supplies:
- Cutting board
- Paring knife
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper (optional)
- toothpick
How to Make Easy Mummy Dogs:
To make things even easier for you, I created a simple photo guide below. For all measurements and a more detailed guide, check out the video and print out the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
Prepare the Dough Strips
Step 1 – Unroll your sheet of crescent roll dough and place on a cutting board. Make sure not to break the dough apart.
Step 2 – Pinch the seams of the crescent rolls together. Flip the dough over and repeat.
Step 3 – Using a paring knife, cut the dough into strips about 1/4 inch wide. Set the dough strips aside.
Wrap the Hot Dogs
Step 4 – Place the end of a dough strip at one end of the hot dog and pinch it down into place.
Step 5 – Gently wrap the strip around the hot dog, leaving a space for the mummy dog’s face. Add more dough strips as necessary, gently pulling on the dough to create thinner and wider strips of ‘fabric’. Repeat until all hot dogs are covered, or you run out of dough.
Bake the Mummies
Step 6 – Place the mummy dogs on a sheet pan prepared with parchment paper. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the crescent roll dough is lightly browned, but not dark.
Step 7 – Using a toothpick, add ketchup or mustard eyes in the opening for the mummy dog’s face.
Essential Tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes.
- Slightly overlap the perforated crescent roll dough the make it stay together better as a single sheet. Alternatively, you can also use the canned crescent roll dough sheets.
- Hot dogs can be slippery while you’re wrapping them. Take your time for the first hotdog or two and you’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly.
- Don’t worry about it if the crescent roll dough breaks while you’re wrapping the hotdog, just add a new strip and press them together.
- Gently stretching the crescent roll dough as you wrap up the mummy dogs creates more texture and a more interesting mummy look.
- Kids don’t like ketchup or mustard? You can also use candy eyes, or simply leave the eyes off. The mummy dogs will still be just as cute.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Absolutely. You can prepare your ingredients and assemble the mummies, then bake until just set, then reheat them as described below.
Yes! Any type and size of hot dogs will work in this recipe. Just be sure to adjust the baking time if you’re using hot dogs of a different size or if you’re using meat alternatives.
For Halloween dinner we keep things simple and serve them with clementine pumpkins and one or two fun non alcoholic Halloween drinks.
If you’re making mummy dogs for a party, be sure to keep them warm on something like this and serve them with more fun treats like:

How to Store Mummy Dogs
If you have leftovers or want to make the mummy dogs ahead of time, here’s what you need to know:
- Bake your mummy dogs as directed in the recipe card.
- Allow to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. You can also wrap each one individually with foil or plastic wrap if desired.
- When you’re ready to reheat, place the mummy dogs on a sheet pan with parchment paper. (We like to put them directly on a baking stone to keep the dough crispy)
- Transfer the mummy dogs to a cold oven, and let the oven preheat to 350°F. When the oven is preheated, use a thermometer to see if the hot dogs are warmed through. Check every 3-5 minutes until they’re warm and ready to enjoy.
