How to Make Dessert Sushi:
To make things even easier for you, I created a simple step by step photo guide below. For all measurements and a more detailed guide, check out the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
Step 1 – Gather your ingredients together. Remove the wrapper from the green fruit roll-up and place it flat on a cutting board.
Step 2 – Place a Twinkie at one end of the fruit roll-up. Do not roll up the Twinkie.
Step 3 – Using a sharp knife cut the Twinkie into four pieces, rocking the knife to cut along the fruit roll up at the same time.
Step 4 – Roll the Twinkie slices in the fruit roll-up strips to resemble the sushi.
Step 5 – Add a Swedish Fish on top.
Step 6 – Repeat with remaining Twinkies and Fruit Roll-Ups. Transfer them to a platter to serve the sweet sushi.
Essential tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes.
- Use the Twinkie as a guide for cutting the roll-up to size.
- Make sure you use a very sharp knife so you can get the cleanest cut possible.
- Place the Twinkie along the angle of the fruit roll up edge. for best results.
- Try not to drag the knife when you cut because it spreads the Twinkie filling and cake crumbs.
- If the fruit roll up doesn’t cut all the way down, finish cutting the Twinkie, wipe off the knife and then finish cutting the roll up.
- Use different flavored and colored Jolly Rancher roll-ups if you want to make the dessert sushi match a color scheme.
When to Serve Candy Sushi
It may seem like there aren’t many times to serve dessert sushi, but it’s actually more versatile than you might think! Here are some fun occasions where you might want to make it:
- Under the Sea parties
- Octonauts parties
- April Fool’s Day
- Luau parties
- Beach parties
- Japanese anime parties
- Mermaid parties

Frequently asked questions:
The green roll-up looks just like the seaweed wrap you would find on savory sushi. The Swedish fish candies look like a fish you might find on your usual sushi and the Twinkies resemble the color of rice. It is all for a bit of fun but visually they look like sushi.
If you can’t get hold of Twinkies then you could also make mini rice krispie treat rolls. It’s not as quick, but will look just like rice in real sushi rolls. The sushi rolls can also be made from different sweet roll-ups and you can use different candies like gummy worms on the top. This is a great recipe to get creative with.
These sweet treats are for special occasions, but you can make them a little bit healthier. Instead of Swedish Fish, you can use fresh or freeze dried strawberry slices, and instead of Twinkies use some fresh fruit like bananas or mango slices. Get creative and have fun with it!
How to Store Dessert Sushi
This is a great recipe to make ahead of time ready for when you need them. The biggest concern is that the Twinkies will dry out.
To avoid this, store wrapped Twinkies (without the candy on top) in an airtight at room temperature. Place wax paper or parchment paper between layers to avoid sticking. Add the candies right before you’re ready to serve.
Serve within two days for best results.

This is SO cute and fun! I made a birthday cake for my sushi-loving son once that was similar but used rice krispie treats. Twinkies would be so much easier. Pinning! Visiting from Happy Now.
