- The bright red topper is just adorable!
- Kids love them for their fun shape – and their sweetness of course
What You’ll Need:
Ingredients:
- Red candy melts
- Large marshmallows
- White nonpareils or pearl sprinkles
Supplies:
- Small, microwave safe bowl
- Wax paper
- Plate, or shallow container
Step-by-Step Directions:
To make things even easier for you, I created a simple photo guide below. For all measurements and a more detailed guide, check out the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
- In a small, microwave-safe bowl, microwave the red candy melts for 30 seconds. Stir, then heat and stir in 15-30 second intervals until the candy melts are completely melted and smooth.
- Dip the top half of a large marshmallow into the melted candy.
- Immediately sprinkle with white nonpareils and set on a sheet covered with wax paper until set.
Essential Tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes.
- Be careful not to overheat the candy melts, or they may burn and seize. It’s best to heat them up in short bursts and stop heating them when they’re almost, but not completely melted. Then simply stir until the remaining bits are melted and the candy is smooth.
- For easier cleanup, add the sprinkles over a plate or a shallow container.
- Make sure your room isn’t too cold, otherwise the chocolate will harden too quickly. (for more chocolate tips, see my post on How to Melt Chocolate)
Frequently Asked Questions:
Yes, but make sure you use oil based food coloring, otherwise your candy melts could seize and be ruined.
You can certainly try! To make them look more like regular mushrooms, I would lightly coat the marshmallows in cocoa powder and then dip them in light brown candy melts or milk chocolate chips. Add a dusting of cocoa powder on the chocolate after it’s set to give them a more natural look.
When Should I Make Toadstool Marshmallows?
We made them for my son’s Minecraft themed party, but you could also serve them at a Mario party, camping party, fairy themed party, a woodland themed party, or any theme that celebrates nature.
How to Display Marshmallow Mushrooms
Since we were celebrating a Minecraft party, I simply placed them on a black plate, but here are some other ideas:
- Add them on top of green died coconut flakes or frilly green lettuce leaves.
- Place them on top of cupcakes with green frosting for a cute topper.
- Make them look like they’re in a terrarium tucked in among chocolate candy rocks.
- Display them on wood chargers or wood tiered trays for an enchanted forest look
Pro Tip: Never directly garnish with things that aren’t edible. If you look at the pictures here, you’ll see that the moss is nearby, but the marshmallows don’t touch it at all.
Storage Tips
These marshmallow mushrooms will keep at room temperature for up to 3 days. For best results, store them in an airtight container away from direct sunlight and humidity.
To prevent them from sticking together, separate each layer with parchment paper. Do not refrigerate or freeze as this can cause the chocolate to bloom.
