How to Make S’mores Cereal Treats (Step-by-step instructions):
To make things even easier for you, I created a simple photo guide below. For all measurements and a more detailed guide, check out the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
Step 1 – In a large stockpot, melt butter over medium low heat.
Step 2 – Add 5.5 cups miniature marshmallows, stirring frequently until the marshmallows are all melted and incorporated with the butter.
Step 3 – Remove from the pot from heat and gently stir in Golden Grahams cereal and the remaining 1.5 cups miniature marshmallows.
Step 4 – Add half of the cereal marshmallow mixture to a prepared 9×13 inch pan and press it into the bottom until it is in an even layer.
Step 5 – Break apart the Hershey bars. Add the pieces of 1.5 bars on top of the cereal layer.
Step 6 – Add the other half of the cereal mixture on top of the chocolate bars, pressing down to layer evenly in the pan.
Step 7 – Top with the remaining pieces of chocolate bars, then transfer to a refrigerator for an hour to set. Then cut into squares and enjoy!
Essential tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes.
- Gently compress the mixture so that it all sets together, but don’t press too hard. If you press too hard the cereal treats will be difficult to eat.
- Make sure you stir the marshmallows when melting. They can stick to the pan and burn if you are not careful. It doesn’t take too long to melt them as the butter is already melted and hot to begin with.
- Don’t forget to prepare your pan before you get started, otherwise they’ll stick to the pan. You can use nonstick cooking spray, Crisco, butter, or even a layer of parchment paper to keep everything from sticking.
- If you can’t get hold of golden graham cereal then you could use other cereals like Rice Krispies, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or Chex Cereal. It may not be exactly similar in flavor, but the kids are sure to love it either way.
When Is the Best Time to Serve S’mores Cereal Bars?
You don’t really need a reason to serve these sweet treats, but here are some occasions we like to make them:
- Camping parties and S’mores themed parties
- Summer playdates with friends
- Summer picnics
- The neighborhood potluck BBQ
- School or church bake sales
Frequently Asked Questions:
Using a layer of parchment paper or wax paper on top of the cereal mixture helps to spread it easily without making your hands messy.
You can also spray the back of a spoon or spatula with nonstick spray to keep the mixture from sticking.
A few years ago I would have thought that was impossible…but all these random weird shortages over the last couple years make it a real possibility.
If you can’t find chocolate bars, you can also use 2/3 to 3/4 cups chocolate chips. Just make sure to split them evenly between the middle and top layers.
Sure, you can certainly melt the marshmallows in the microwave. Simply place them in a large microwave safe bowl and heat in 30-second increments, stirring each time until everything is completely melted.
Warning: If you choose to use the microwave, make sure you have all your chocolate pieces and your pan ready to go. You won’t have the residual heat from the stock pot to keep the mixture soft between layers.
