These DIY ice cream favor bags are a fun way to send your guests home with plenty of loot from your party. Not only that, but they’re big enough to double as ice cream party decorations.
That’s right. One project = two purposes.
The supplies and materials are also easy to find, and totally customizable with your Cricut cutting machine. Which means you don’t have to go searching high and low for some random item to make the project work.
There are really only a few main steps to this project:
- Draw the waffle cone effect onto brown paper bags,
- Upload the files to Cricut Design Space,
- Customize the design for your bags,
- Cut the bag toppers out, and
- Glue the toppers on.
I love using the Cricut for making these, because half the time to make these is just preparing them in Cricut Design Space.
Which means that, even though the process for a single bag takes about 10 minutes, the overall time for making all your favors will be more like 5 minutes per bag.
What You’ll Need:
- This ice cream scoop template*
- Ruler
- Brown paper bags
- Black fine point permanent marker
- Cricut fine point marker (I used black)
- Cricut cutting machine (this is the kind I have)
- Fine point blade
- Light grip cutting mat
- 8.5×11 card stock (2 sheets for each bag)
- Hot glue gun & hot glue
Tips:
- When drawing the lines on the bag, don’t press too hard. The result is better when you let the marker glide lightly over the bag.
- It’s a good idea to practice the marker stroke on a spare sheet of paper just to get the feel for what you need to do.
- Don’t try to cut (or print out) two copies of one side. To create a more natural look, the ice cream scoop is not perfectly round. Both sides are necessary to make sure the top is even.
- Make sure you give your ink plenty of time to dry before unloading the paper from the mat. You don’t want the ink to smudge!

How to Make Easy Ice Cream Cone Favor Bags
Easy DIY ice cream party favor bags are a fun way to send your guests home with lots of loot. They also double as fantastic party decorations with the look of giant ice cream cones.
Tools
- Ruler
- Black Fine point permanent marker
- Cricut Fine Point Marker (I used black)
- Cricut cutting machine (I used the Maker)
- Fine point blade for your cutting machine
- Light grip cutting mat
- Hot glue gun & hot glue
Instructions
Create the Cone:
- Before starting, measure the width of your bag so that you know exactly how wide you need your ice cream scoop to be. Make a note of the measurement and set it aside.
- Place a brown paper bag flat on the table with the short side facing you.
- Starting an inch or so in from to the corner of the bag, carefully draw a curved line from the short side of the bag to the long side. Make sure not to press too hard. It's best to press lightly.
- Repeat the same stroke every inch or so until your bag has 7 or 8 curved lines all going in the same direction.
- Now, turn the bag 90 degrees so the long side is facing you and repeat steps 3 and 4 to create a waffle cone effect.
- Let the marker dry for a minute or so, then repeat steps 2 - 5 on that side.
Upload the SVG File to Cricut Design Space
- Open a new design in Cricut Design Space.
- Click upload image and then select the ice cream scoop SVG file. Click Open.
- Rename the file and add tags in CDS if you like, and then click Save.
- Select the design in your uploads and then click Insert Image.
- Ungroup the image and then move to the next steps.
Prepare and Cut out the Ice Cream Topper
- Select one of the squiggly lines in the ice cream scoop, and change the line type from "Cut" to "Draw". If you like, you can change the color of the draw line to match the color of your pen.
- Repeat with the other scoop's squiggly line.
- Select the ice cream scoop and its corresponding squiggly line. Click Attach. Repeat with the second side of the ice cream scoop.
- Resizing for different bags: The file should come sized to fit bags roughly 7 3/4 inches wide. If your bags are a different size, click the lock to keep the proportions the same. Then select both ice cream scoops and resize them to a width that is slightly larger than the width off your bag.
- Select both ice cream scoops and duplicate them to create as many bag toppers as you have favors (eg. duplicate 4 times for 5 favors).
- If you're making bags in more than one color, this is the time to change the colors. Then click Make It
- Load your paper onto your mats. Make sure in the mat preview matches the correct size paper. In this case, I used 8.5" x 11" paper.
- If you're using a Maker, then you can load the pen into clamp A and the fine point blade in clamp B. If you're using a different cutting machine, you may need to load the pen first and then do another pass with the blade.
- Load your mat into the machine and press the go button.
- When the machine is finished, unload the mat and then give the marker ink a couple minutes to dry before unloading the paper from the mat. (you don't want the ink to smudge)
Assemble the Bag:
- Apply a small bead of glue to the top of the brown paper bag. (Do not add glue to any handles that might be on the bag)
- Quickly add the ice cream scoop to the hot glue, making sure the drawn line faces out.
- Repeat with the other ice cream scoop on the opposite side of the bag, making sure the scoops align to one another.
- Open up the bag and fill with goodies.
Notes
Tips:
- When drawing the lines on the bag, don’t press too hard. The result is better when you let the marker glide lightly over the paper.
- It’s a good idea to practice the marker stroke on a spare sheet of paper just to get the feel for what you need to do.
- Don’t try to cut (or print out) two copies of one side of the ice cream scoop. In order to look more natural, it is not symmetrical.
- Make sure you give your ink plenty of time to dry before unloading the paper from the mat. You don’t want the ink to smudge!
