With just some simple materials, and a few easy steps, you can make two different versions of this budget friendly party decoration that are sure to dazzle your guests and make any room look stunning. So, break out the coffee filters and let’s get crafting!
Why You’ll Love this Coffee Filter Garland
- Cost: Even if you have to purchase all the materials on the list, you can easily make a long garland for less than $15 – and have plenty of monofilament left over for other fun projects.
- Easy: The process is very simple and a single garland can be made in an afternoon.
- Versatile: Customize your garlands with any colors to use for parties, holidays, weddings, or even as home decor
- Impact: The end result is a fun, fluffy garland that packs a lot of punch.
What You’ll Need:
- Coffee filters
- Fishing line (aka. monofilament)
- Sewing needle
- Command hooks
A Few Notes about the supplies:
Coffee filters: flat bottom. I dyed mine pink, but you can use them in white or natural.
Fishing line: One of my favorite party supplies! Don’t go with anything too heavy. I used 15 pound fishing line, but 10 pound would probably be better.
Sewing needle: Make sure you use a big needle with a wide eye so the fishing line can fit through.
Two Different Coffee Filter Garlands!
I’ve included directions for two different styles of garlands:
Style 1: A Full, Fluffy Garland
First up is a garland with no spacing or gaps, resulting in a large, fluffy garland that is stunning to look at.
This style works well for maximalist styles, like princess parties. It also works well for other special occasions like weddings or bridal showers.
It also takes the most time, materials, and patience to make as it requires the most coffee filters.
Style 2: A Funky, ‘Tassel’-style garland
Next, I’ll show you how to create this funkier version that alternates sections of coffee filters with open areas, making an airy, almost tassel-style garland.
It’s great for boho parties, quirky home decor, or any occasion that requires a bit of whimsy.
This is a great option for anyone who wants to make something a bit more surprising, or someone who doesn’t have as much time as you would need to make the full garland above.
Essential Tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes.
- If you don’t want to keep a big spool of fishing line in your craft supplies, you can also use invisible thread.
- Make sure you have a wide needle, otherwise the monofilament might not fit through the eye.
- Sometimes the eye of the needle sticks as it goes through the coffee filters. Rotate the needle to make the opening larger, or using rubber gloves to grip the needle and pull it through.
- Don’t forget, you can also use the monofilament to tie multiple short garlands together.
- Makes a great addition to a nursery or playroom once the party is over.
Get Creative!
Customize the garland by adding flowers, beads, glitter, or any other lightweight embellishments you can think of. This is a fun time to show off your crafty side and make it uniquely yours.
Sure! Feel free to try completely open coffee filters, or filters folded in half, for a slightly different look.
If you’re planning to have the garland against a wall, it’s nice to have the filters folded at least once, so it can sit nearly flat against the wall and still look nice and full.
Command hooks are by far my favorite way to hang party decorations like this, but you can also try using nails, thumbtacks, or even masking tape.
I have a full tutorial for how to dye coffee filters right here. Don’t skip reading it, It’s filled with helpful tips, like how to achieve different textures and color shades.
As for colors, I used varying shades of pink coffee filters, but you can create any color combination you like. Here are some ideas:
➡ Purple and blue for a mermaid look (add a bit of glitter spray to make it sparkle)
➡ Make a rainbow garland with all the colors of the rainbow
➡ Brown and white for a boho celebration
➡ Blue and green with some glittery edges for any beach or ocean themed party.
