There are so many ways to garnish mixed drinks, but drinks with salted rims often end up looking bland. Why not learn how to make colored margarita salt?
You know it makes mixed drinks more fun? Awesome garnishes. From citrus twists to salted rims, it’s the garnish that takes any drink from ‘good’ to ‘great’.
Sure, it’s easier to stir it up with a spoon, or mix it in your shaker, then pour it in a glass and call it a day, but what would be the fun in that?
7 Easy Ways to Garnish Your Mixed Drinks
Garnish doesn’t have to be time-consuming or over-the-top. Here are some easy options to make your drinks look as good as they taste:
- Spear a complimentary fruit or vegetable with a toothpick (think olives, cherries, cranberries, etc.)
- Add a slice of fresh fruit to a summery drink, or a sliced candied fruit for a winter cocktail.
- Make a mini stir-stick with a woody herb, such as rosemary.
- Add pre-made citrus curls to the rim or inside the glass.
- Have fun with your ice cubes. You can make them in cute little shapes, or even giant balls. Maybe add a little edible flower or herb in the middle for some color.
- Turn the drink into it’s own garnish by layering ingredients that have different densities.
- Add colored sugar sprinkles, crushed candy, or even edible glitter to the rim.
But What About Margaritas?
Margaritas are hands down my favorite cocktail. I love the combination of the sweet and sour drink paired with just a touch of salt on the rim of the glass.
I even craved margaritas while I was pregnant!
But margaritas don’t lend themselves well to most of the garnishes listed above. First, it would ruin that perfect marriage of the salty rim with the cocktail inside. And then, the flavors aren’t entirely lemon or entirely lime. The margarita is a completely unique flavor. What garnish would go with it?
But that doesn’t mean that you’re limited to plain old white margarita salt. Far from it. Why not figure out how to make colored margarita salt instead? That way it can match the season, or your party decor, if you wish.
After all, food coloring comes in dozens of colors these days, and the process is pretty darn simple.

How to Make Colored Margarita Salt
There are so many ways to garnish mixed drinks, but drinks with salted rims often end up looking bland. Why not learn how to make colored margarita salt
Ingredients
- Margarita salt*
- Food coloring in your preferred color
- Small bowl
- Fork or small whisk
Instructions
- Add one quarter to one half cup of margarita salt to a small bowl.
- For every quarter cup of margarita salt, add two drops of food coloring.
- Stir with a fork or a small whisk to combine.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 with one drop of food coloring at a time until you achieve your desired color.
Notes
- Make sure you are using true margarita salt. The texture of table salt, sea salt, and kosher salt don't adhere to glass rims quite the same way.
- Even if the food coloring appears to be the color you want, you may need to add a drop or so of another color. I found that green food coloring turned the salt turquoise. A single drop of yellow created the perfect shade of green for the holiday season.
