Step-by-Step Directions :
To make things even easier for you, I created a simple photo guide below. To save a copy for future use, remember to print out a copy of the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
Prepare the Batters:

Step 1 – Prepare brownie mix according to package directions in a large bowl.

Step 2 – In a separate large bowl, mix cake mix with 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1/3 cup milk, and 1 egg.

Step 3 – Fold 1/4 cup holiday colored M&Ms into each batter.
Layer the Batters and Candies:

Step 4 – Pour 1/3 to 1/2 of the brownie mix into bottom of a parchment covered 13×9 inch pan and spread with a spoon to the edges.

Step 5 – Gently place Hershey’s Kisses (or Rolos) and Hershey’s Hugs on top of brownie mix. Do not press into batter. Pour remaining brownie batter on top of kisses, trying to spread as evenly as possible without moving around the Hershey’s kisses and hugs.

Step 6 – Drop large spoonfuls of cake batter on top of and between the brownie batter. Use the cake batter to fill in as many of the holes in the brownie batter as possible and to cover as much of the kisses as possible. Be careful not to cover all of the brownie batter. (Note: you may have some cake batter left over)
Bake:

Step 7 – With a toothpick, swirl brownie and cake mixes together. This is also a good time to try to cover any of the tops of the kisses that might still be showing.

Step 8 – Sprinkle with a scant 1/4 C of holiday colored M&MS and bake at 350°F for 25-35 min.

Essential Tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes
- Lining the pan with parchment paper means you can easily easily remove and cut the brownies into perfect squares.
- Get your kids to help unwrap all the Hersheys and Rolos candies. Just make sure to have plenty of extra candy on hand for hungry little mouths.
- Be sure to only swirl the batters together, do not actually mix them. This will give you beautiful chocolate and yellow streaks throughout your brownie tops
- You can use any variety of Hershey’s Kisses or Hugs for a different flavor profile – try peppermint for a festive twist!
- Feel free to go crazy with more fillings and toppings! Add drizzle melted chocolate on top of the cooled brownies, layer on extra extra holiday sprinkles, or try different flavored candies (like peppermint kisses) for a festive flavor twist.
- Let the brownies cool completely before cutting to prevent them from falling apart.
- Even though your oven shows a temperature, there are often hot and cold spots. I recommend that you check your brownies about 5-10 minutes before the baking time to see if they’re done early. Remember, they continue to bake as they cool down.
