We didn’t mean to go without a jack-o-lantern this Halloween. It just kind of happened. More than one attempt to go pick pumpkins earlier in the month ended up with us leaving empty-handed for one reason or another. And since Halloween was on a Saturday I naturally kept thinking that Halloween day was the best day to carve it anyway, right? That way it wouldn’t rot out before we could put our flameless candle inside.
But as I got lost in a sea of ‘fun family activities’ like mummy dogs, clementine pumpkins and chocolate pudding, time was slowly creeping by. Before we all knew it, it was 4:30 and we were just sitting down to carve the big pumpkin. But by then the kids were covered in paint and glitter from decorating their pumpkins, so it was time to move on to baths, costumes, pizza and trick-or-treating.
No matter, the kids were still pretty thrilled that it was finally Halloween! Amazingly enough, both girls decided in September what they wanted to be for Halloween this year…and didn’t change their minds once.
L wanted to be a pumpkin, and fell in love with a tutu costume she saw when I was doing a quick Google image search. After seeing a price of $40 on Etsy, I figured I could make my own version pretty easily. All it took was a pumpkin shirt from Target, three rolls of orange tulle, and some extra green ribbon from my craft room stash. Add some leggings, black boots and a black shirt for warmth and you have a perfect little tutu pumpkin!
T wanted to be a spider web for Halloween this year. Of course she is far too familiar with Pinterest, and once she saw this cape, she was sold. Thankfully I had a large piece of white felt in my stash. I roughly followed the directions in a video I found on YouTube (see it here), added a bunch of plastic spiders, and as many solid black clothes we could find from T’s wardrobe. The mask was a lucky find from Target’s dollar spot. And there you have a child sized spider web.
The Husband referred to her as the “Spider Queen.”
In other news, baby E is now over two months old. Right before the time change he had started to settle into something kind of like a predictable routine. We were even able to put him down in his bed a couple of times. His cheeks are getting chubby and he’s spending more and more time awake.
He’s a pretty chill baby…which is a welcome change after L’s first year (love that child like crazy, but she spent most of her first year crying). He’s sometimes stingy with his smiles, but when he does smile it lights up the whole room. He also still loves to be swaddled. I love it too, because it means he gets a pretty good night’s sleep!
We’re also playing the waiting game with figuring out what color his eyes will be. The girls both have the Husband’s brown eyes, but part of me really wants to have a kid with my blue eyes. Right now E’s eyes are deep blue around the edges and the centers seem to change color with the lighting. Sometimes they’re light blue and sometimes they’re a gold-ish brown.
