How to Use the File

What You’ll Need

This file is pretty simple, all you’ll need is:

  • This file (grab your free copy at the bottom of this post!)
  • Printer and computer
  • White printer paper
  • Pencils, pens, or markers for kids to record their findings.
  • Optional: If you’re using the black-and-white version, have crayons or colored pencils on hand for coloring fun!

Instructions

  1. Download the file to your computer.
  2. Print the design of your choice using your home printer or at a local print shop. Remember to print out a few more than you need, just in case.
  3. Provide a pen or pencil for kids to write their answers. Optional: Include crayons, markers, or colored pencils if you’re using the black-and-white version.
  4. Explain the directions of the game to the kids (see below)
  5. Pass out the papers and their focus sharpens while they search and count!

How to Play I Spy

The goal of this version of I Spy is for the kids to identify how many of each object appear on the sheet. Then they write the total in the legend at the bottom of the page.

Make it More Fun: Put a time limit on the activity and see who can finish first.

Important Tips to Remember

  • This file works best if opened in Adobe Acrobat. It may be able to open in other programs (e.g. Mac Preview), but I cannot guarantee that it will provide the best printing properties.
  • Set your printer to “Best Quality” mode to bring out the vibrant colors.
  • Print out a few extra copies just in case kids make a mistake or want to create multiple coloring sheets.
  • Make it Age Appropriate: Keep things simple for younger children, and encourage older kids to race against the clock!
  • Encourage Interaction: This game works wonderfully for pairs or small teams to build social skills alongside observation.

Absolutely! Feel free to print as many as you need to accommodate your group of kids.

While it’s designed for young children, older kids may also enjoy the challenge, especially if they tackle it as a timed activity.
