How to Make a Minecraft Creeper Cake:
To make things even easier for you, I created a simple photo guide below. For all measurements and a more detailed guide, check out the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
Step 1 – Bake the cake in two 9×9 pans according to package directions. Allow to cool completely.
Step 2 – Mix the buttercream frosting and green food coloring until the color is evenly dispersed.
Step 3 – Spread 1/3 of the buttercream on top of the bottom layer of cake. Place the second cake on top and then spread the remaining frosting over the entire cake.
Step 4 – Separate the fondant into 3 portions: 2 1-cup portions and and 1 1/2 to 1 cup portion.
Step 5 – Knead the fondant with the food coloring until you have 1 cup of light green, 1 cup of black, and at least 1/2 cup of dark green fondant. (Don’t be surprised if your hands get stained)*
Step 6 – Roll out the fondant on a baking mat with a rolling pin until it is no more than 1/4 inch thick.
Step 7 – Cut the all three fondant colors into 1-inch squares.
Step 8 – Arrange the fondant squares on the top of the cake to look like a creeper. (Download the pdf pattern at the bottom of this post to make counting and arranging the squares super easy.)
Essential Tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before starting to avoid any potential mistakes.
- A silicone baking mat with measurements is very helpful for both rolling and measuring the fondant.
- Bake your cakes with a layer of parchment paper on the bottom to make it easier to remove them from the pan.
- Make sure you check the back of your boxed cake mix to ensure you can make two layers of cake.
- Bake the cake a day in advance so you can be sure it’s nice and cool. That way the frosting won’t melt all over the cake.
- A pastry cutter is great for making sure you have even cuts to make even squares.
- If you mix the fondant the day before, keep it in a plastic bag to prevent it from drying out.
Pro Tip: Using a template makes arranging the squares much easier. I have a free template you can download at the bottom of this post. But don’t worry about making sure you have every square on your cake. As long as you keep the pattern consistent it will look great!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Storage Tips
Make ahead:
The best way to store the cake is in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator. Use toothpicks between the fondant squares to keep the plastic wrap from ruining the design and the frosting.
To freeze:
I don’t recommend freezing the completed cake, but you can freeze the cake layers in advance. Wrap each layer tightly with plastic wrap and place in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before assembling and decorating.
