Chocolate dipped strawberries with sprinkles are the perfect way to wow your family and friends for your next celebration. Not only will they look amazing but they’ll also taste incredible – all at a fraction of what you would pay in stores!
Today I’ve decorated the chocolate dipped strawberries for a Cinco de Mayo party, but I’ll also show you how you can easily switch them up for July 4th, Valentine’s Day, Easter or any other special occasion.
Why You’ll Love Homemade Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
- Pretty: White chocolate contrasts beautifully with bright red strawberries, and the extra layer of sprinkles make them just beautiful
- Simple: Dry, dip, dip, dry…it’s as easy as that!
- Affordable: Store bought chocolate dipped strawberries are ridiculously expensive, and go bad sooner than homemade…making these a no brainer to DIY instead of buy.
- Delicious: The combination of sweet white chocolate, juicy strawberries and crunchy sprinkles make for a perfect flavor combo!
What You’ll Need:
Ingredients:
- Fresh strawberries
- White chocolate chips
- Green sugar sprinkles
Supplies:
- Paper towels or absorbent cloth towels like these
- Medium microwave safe bowl
- Fork or small whisk
- Small bowl or ramekin
- Parchment paper
Step-by-Step Directions:
To make things even easier for you, I created a simple photo guide below. For all measurements and a more detailed guide, check out the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
- Wash and thoroughly dry all of your strawberries
- Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for 30 seconds. Stir with a fork or a small whisk, then heat on high in 15 second intervals, stirring in between until the chocolate chips are almost completely melted and smooth.
- Dip each strawberry in the white chocolate ¾ of the way to the top.
- Immediately dip the tip of the white chocolate covered strawberry in the green sprinkles.
- Transfer to a sheet of parchment paper to set.
Essential Tips:
Don’t skip these tips – read them before baking to avoid any potential mistakes.
- When selecting strawberries, choose berries that are firm, fully ripe and free of any bruises. You’ll also get the prettiest results if you choose berries that are bright red all the way to their stems.
- Make sure your berries are room temperature and completely dry before dipping them in chocolate. I like to use paper towels or a clean flour sack cloth to blot off any possible moisture. Otherwise it may cause the chocolate to seize and won’t create a smooth coating. (See my full explanation in my How to Melt Chocolate tutorial)
- You can also add a small amount of shortening to your white chocolate chips to help them melt more smoothly, but make sure you don’t use too much (only 1/2 to 1 teaspoon), or the chocolate won’t set up properly.
- If your kitchen is hot or humid, allow the chocolate to come to room temperature and then finish setting in the refrigerator. Otherwise, allow the chocolate to set at room temperature for best results. (Warm chocolate put in the refrigerator can cause a chalky finish, which definitely isn’t pretty)
- Don’t forget these strawberries also make a gorgeous garnish for a charcuterie board, placed on top of a cake, or served with champagne!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best chocolate for chocolate covered strawberries?
For casual or everyday treats, you can use white chocolate chips from most grocery stores.
If you’re making these strawberries for a special occasion and want the best results, I recommend using high quality melting wafers from Ghiradelli or Merckens.
Can You Freeze chocolate covered strawberries?
Though I don’t reccomend it, you can freeze chocolate covered strawberries. (See how to freeze them in the storage tips below)
Why don’t I recommend freezing strawberries? Strawberries frozen in a home freezer (as opposed to flash frozen at extremely low temperatures) tend to be mushy after they’ve been defrosted, so the texture will be very different. Eating them while still mostly frozen can be pretty tasty, though.
Do Chocolate Covered Strawberries need to be refrigerated?
Yes, it is best to store chocolate covered strawberries in the refrigerator. For best results, transfer them to a lidded container lined with parchment paper and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Serve chilled for optimal texture.
How to Adapt this recipe for other occasions:
The red strawberries, white chocolate, and green sprinkles make for perfect Cinco de Mayo strawberries, or even Christmas strawberries…but here are some ways to make them for every season and holiday:
- Spring/Easter: Instead of dipping the tips of the strawberries, add pastel sprinkles all over the outside.
- New Year’s Eve: Gold and white sugar sprinkles are a gorgeous combination to ring in the new year, or even for weddings.
- Valentine’s Day: Use pink sprinkles for the tip and add some edible gold leaf hearts for a sweet treat
- St. Patrick’s Day: Let the white chocolate set, then drizzle green candy melts on top for a fun St. Patrick’s Day contrast.
- Memorial Day or July 4th Strawberries: Substitute the green sprinkles with navy blue sprinkles!
- Summer Strawberries: Keep it simple with a drizzle of chocolate to let the fresh strawberry flavor shine!
- Halloween/Thanksgiving: Use dark chocolate instead of white chocolate and drizzle with orange candy melts.
More Topping Ideas for Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
I love using sprinkles for their festive look, but you can use other foods to decorate your chocolate coated strawberries, too:
- Chopped nuts are a classic touch. I prefer chopped pistachios, almonds, or peanuts
- Sprinkle some crushed cookies on top, such as Oreos, graham crackers, or crushed strawberry sugar
- Give your strawberries a tropical vibe with coconut flakes, or even toasted coconut
- Sprinkle some sea salt on top to bring out the deliciousness of the chocolate and strawberries
- For a more elegant touch, add an edible flower to each strawberry, or decorate with edible gold leaf, luster dust, or edible glitter
How to Storage Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Leftovers or To Make Ahead: Once the chocolate is completely set, place your strawberries in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
To Freeze: First, freeze the strawberries on a parchment covered sheet or plate, making sure they aren’t touching one another. Then transfer the strawberries to an airtight container for up to 3 months. Defrost them in the refrigerator or enjoy them frozen.
