Did you know that it’s National Teacher Day? Our girls will be celebrating their teachers this morning with fresh flowers. Last year we were able to bring in hydrangeas and peonies from our garden, but since winter decided to keep a strong hold on the area for an extra few weeks, all of our flowers are a few weeks behind schedule.
And yes, I consider our girls’ daycare a school. Why? First of all, it’s accredited as a school and follows the county school year for enrollment. So there is that. And then, I found out when T was a mere 18 months old that the teachers even for that room were required to prepare and execute daily lesson plans. No, they don’t sit at desks each day, but they are learning a lot. Often I’m convinced they’re learning more than they would if I stayed home with them.
I am so grateful for our girls’ teachers. We’ve been lucky enough to have some really fantastic teachers guiding both our girls over the last four years. Teachers with a true gift for guiding young children. Yes, there were one or two that I didn’t care for, but they weren’t the lead teacher…and I quickly noticed that they didn’t show up again the next school year.
But the good ones…they are simply amazing. Sometimes I hang back before walking into the classroom. I watch them with the kids and see how they interact. Their patience alone is a gift. But then a child acts up and these women maintain composure and grace (nothing against male teachers, we just haven’t had experience with them yet) . They inspire our girls to learn – about anything and everything.
(Our letter to the girls’ teachers in Christmas of 2012)
The littlest ones have weekly or monthly themes, and even had short version of circle time. The preschoolers are interested in everything…from astronomy to writing practice, reading and math. But none of that would be possible without a special talent; a gift for working with children.
Hopefully this will just be the first few in a long line of amazing teachers for our girls. But for today we’re just sending a few small tokens of our appreciation for those who choose to share their time and talents with kids every day.
And for those of you who teach…thank you for all you do to help shape our children.
