Let’s chat, shall we? From fitness to favorite reads, here’s what’s going on in our lives currently (January 2017).
The photo above feels a bit misleading. There’s no snow on the ground here. In fact, the weather was in the upper 50s yesterday. I took that photo last winter when we had one of those snowfalls that didn’t affect the roads at all, but left a beautiful dusting on everything around us.
I drive by that farm several times a week, and never fail to notice how beautiful it is. Whether it’s covered in snow, filled with bright green pastures dotted with cows, or just even wet with rain. It’s such a blessing to be raising my family near a reminder of what much of our surrounding area once was. That even though we live deep in suburbia, there’s a little bit of rural farm town still inside us.
About a year ago, I promised monthly updates on health and wellness journey. I suppose it’s better to fulfill promises later than never, right? Here are a few snippets of what we’ve been up to.
Health & Wellness:
January marked my most consistent month back at the gym since baby E was born! It feels so good to get back on the treadmill. The plan is to run two 5k races this year…a lot for this non-runner. Hopefully, by next month I can tell you definitively when that first race will happen.
Exercise: 9 trips to the gym so far. Yay!
Dietary Improvements: Ummm…check back later on this one, k?
I’m looking for some good non-junk food items to snack on. Any tips?
The baby has changed so much since he turned one last August. He’s probably the snuggliest baby we’ve had. He loves to give hugs and kisses, and even kisses his own reflection with a big smooch!
However, language development is still slow for him. He’s saying things…we just don’t know what they are! Though we have figured out a few things: “Cook-M” can be “cookie”, “chicken”, or “cucumber”! “Day” is really “Neigh”. “Mm” is a dog barking. Though the kid can “Baa” with the best of them and is excellent at signing “Please”.
He’s climbing on everything. I never expected we would have to do so much babyproofing (as evidenced by the mark on his forehead, poor boy). He climbs in and on just about everything…including any chair or box he can get into, onto the coffee table, his toy play table, the stove, the dishwasher, the refrigerator…the climbing never ends.
But even with all those antics, he’s still our sweet boy. Get him especially giggly, and he puts his hand over his mouth, or gives you a huge grin and does a little dance. That’s one of my absolute favorites.
I get most of my books through our local library’s Kindle lending program, which means I end up on a lot of wait lists. This is a book my friend Janine recommended last month. When she said it was similar to The Nightingale (which I LOVED last year) I just had to try it. After waiting for nearly 200 others to finish it, I finally got my chance starting last week.
I’m only about halfway through, but it’s very interesting. Admittedly, there are some parts that are hard to read. But what do you expect when you’re reading about life in Europe during World War II? I’ll share final thoughts next month.
Do you have any favorite books to recommend?
Starting in January I’ve been getting up at 5am (okay, 5:30am) to get some work done before everyone else is awake. There’s no doubt that it’s helped my productivity, and I love how accomplished I feel every day before the sun is even up.
Lack of sleep from getting up so early. Even after an early rise, a good workout, and a busy day, this night owl can stay up until midnight without a second thought. More sleep is important though. My goal for February is to make a habit out of going to bed by 11pm. Six hours of sleep is better than 4 or 5, right?
How much sleep do you get each night?
Inspirational Quote of the Month:
“Be the girl who decided to go for it.” – Unknown
This quote just about sums it all up. Between fitness, work, parenting, and everything else. Just go for it.
