That’s right. We bought a pre-cooked Thanksgiving Turkey last year. I’ll say it again: We bought a pre-cooked Thanksgiving turkey. And I have absolutely no regrets about it.
Typically when I take on special dinners, I get a vision in my head of exactly how I want everything to be (a vision which rarely ends up becoming reality). This often means overextending myself so that the day of the meal I’m running around and don’t get to enjoy anything. When I was volunteered for Thanksgiving last year, I wanted to make it as low-key as possible, while keeping everything as pretty and tasty as possible.
My mother-in-law offered to bring at homemade bread, brussel sprouts and the stuffing, and I immediately accepted. (Well, honestly I wanted to make the stuffing, but she insisted. With a rambunctious three year old and a needy infant I had no extra energy to argue those days, so her stuffing it was) That left us with the turkey, potatoes, another vegetable and dessert. And nothing takes longer to cook than that stinking bird.
So when I found out that Wegman’s would sell us a pre-cooked turkey for the same price we paid for a fresh turkey several years ago…I was on it like white on rice. And while it wasn’t quite the same as homemade, it was worth having that extra time to spend with our family on Thanksgiving Day.
