“But it’s fizzy!” whined my then four-year-old daughter.
I had brought home a bottle of sparkling apple cider thinking that it would be a special treat for my girls. Little did I know at the time that it would be completely rejected simply because of the carbonation.
I should have known better.
Our oldest child was the same way until about age five, when she discovered Sprite and fell in love with carbonated drinks of all kinds.
But even still, my middle child often hesitates with anything that is unknown or carbonated.
Which means that traditional soda-based mocktails for kids usually don’t fit the bill for my middle child…or any other kid who doesn’t like fizzy drinks.

So what do you do to make a special drink for them?
Just because your child doesn’t like carbonated beverages doesn’t mean that you should give up on making a special mocktail. Instead, focus on fun garnishes that add a special touch to already-loved drinks.
Inspired by the crystal-covered ball that drops over One Times Square at midnight on New Year’s Eve, this shimmery ball drop garnish New Year’s Eve mocktails for kids are all about the decoration.
The drink itself is simply lemonade, but the rim and garnish are full of sparkle with a simple sugared rim and a shimmering chocolate truffle on the side.
They’re so sparkly, that you can see my dress reflected in the photos!

What You’ll Need:
- Punch cups or small clear plastic cups
- Cocktail picks
- Edible shimmering dust (I used pearlized white)
- Sparkling Sugar
- White Chocolate Truffles
- Food Safe Paint Brushes
Tips for Rimming Your Glasses
One of the things that irks me most about rimming my cocktails and mocktails with salt or sugar is that it can waste a lot of ingredients. And once you’ve used those ingredients to rim a glass, you can’t put them back into the original container.
Then, I had an idea! What if I used a leftover clear plastic plate (you can use a clear glass plate if you have one) and put the ingredients precisely where the rim of the glass is?
Turns out…it worked perfectly!

Ingredients
- Honey
- Sparkling sugar
- Edible shimmering dust
- White Chocolate Truffles
- Lemonade
Instructions
- Drizzle honey on a small plate in a circle big enough for the lip of your cups. In a second plate, do the same with the sparkling sugar.
- Roll the lip of the cups in the honey and then dip into the sparkling sugar to rim your glass. Set glasses aside.
- Unwrap your white chocolate truffles, and find the small divot. Gently push a cocktail pick into the divot and through the center of the chocolate truffle. Be careful not to crack the truffle.
- Dip the tip of a food-safe paint brush into edible shimmering dust and dab the shimmering dust onto the shell of the truffle.
- Fill your prepared cups with lemonade and garnish with the skewered truffle.
Notes
- Substitute any sticky substance for the honey on the rim of the glass. Agave, simple syrup, or citrus juice would all work well.
- The truffles can be skewered and dusted up to a day in advance and kept in an airtight container.
- Sometimes the truffles can start to slide down the cocktail pick. Make sure the truffle is resting on the lip of your glass to keep it above the lemonade. Or turn it into a ball dropping contest with the kids!
- Colorful paper straws aren't necessary, but add a little extra fun.
- Get creative and adapt the color scheme for any other event. A green rim and red shimmering dust would be perfect for Christmas. Change that green rim to blue and you've got a fun drink for July 4th!
- Fine grain shimmering dust is better than edible glitter flakes or large grains, as it sticks to the truffles without an extra agent like extract or alcohol.
