Very rarely does a birth story turn out exactly the way a parent wants it to. And that’s pretty much the case with All three of my children were born by cesarean section. In the wake of E’s birth and homecoming, I thought it would be interesting to recap all three births; because even though they were all c-sections they were each so very different. Today’s story is all about our second daughter, L. A very abbreviated version of her birth story can be found here, but I’ve updated it with a little bit more detail and some more about c-section recovery.
L’s Birth Story
This c-section went pretty darn well. The anesthesia took effect perfectly, and I stayed alert the entire time. At 5:41am, I heard my second girl let out her first cry. It turns out she was the biggest of all of our babies at 6 lbs 2 oz and 19.5 inches long.
Having a baby in the well-child nursery: I loved, LOVED the fact that L could be brought to my recovery room. The husband stayed home with T every night I was in the hospital, and I got to have some quiet time to spend with my daughter. Even though we struggled with nursing through the sleepy newborn phase, our time there will always be something special that we shared.
On recovery: It’s no surprise that recovery took a little bit longer than it did with T. Opening up the same scar more than once will take its toll. I also made the mistake of trying to wear L in the Moby wrap within two weeks of birth. The pressure around the waist definitely caused irritation around my incision; which made walking extremely painful. I’d recommend using a pouch type sling for the first few weeks. Just please be careful to use proper positioning and avoid chin-to-chest contact.
