Maybe I’m the only one with this problem, but often I end up finding the perfect dish to hold something…except it’s too big. Or maybe, as was the case with our Football Kickoff, I sometimes want a series of dishes all in the same size, but I may not need equal quantities of food.
Thankfully, years ago, I learned a simple and inexpensive trick to help prop food up in serving dishes: napkins.
Seriously, it’s so easy, it almost seems like a silly reason to dedicate a whole post to this technique; but I never thought about it before until someone showed me how to do it; so why not share?
All you have to do is crumple up napkins or paper towels in the bottom of your serving dish to prop your food up. Don’t make a tight ball – just keep it nice and loose so the food can rest on top.
For these clear glasses, I just wrapped some gray scrapbook paper around to cover the crumpled napkins. Paper towels and napkins work great for foods that aren’t too wet, but for sauces you may need to use something else like a cup, bowl, ramekin or shot glass (which is what I used for the sour cream last week).
